Runcorn Saxons FC Appoints New Chairperson to Lead the Club into Its Next Chapter
Runcorn Saxons FC is delighted to announce the appointment of Ciaran Clotworthy as the Club’s new Chairperson.
Ciaran was formally voted into the role at the AGM, following a successful period as Interim Chair after the resignation of Paul Smith in June.
The appointment marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the club, while also recognising the outstanding foundations laid by Paul during his tenure.
Paul was one of the founding members of Runcorn Saxons FC when the club was established in 2019. Through his calm, pragmatic leadership and unwavering commitment, he guided the club from its infancy into one of the area’s fastest growing grassroots football clubs. His steady, no-nonsense approach helped create a strong, sustainable organisation built on sound governance, community values and a passion for providing football opportunities for all.
Everyone at Runcorn Saxons FC extends their sincere thanks to Paul for his incredible contribution and wishes him every success as he steps away from the role due to increased work commitments.

As a founder of Runcorn Saxons FC, Ciaran Clotworthy has played an instrumental role in shaping the club since day one. Bringing more than 20 years of grassroots football experience, she has successfully established, developed and managed grassroots clubs throughout her football journey and possesses a wealth of knowledge that will help drive Runcorn Saxons FC forward both on and off the pitch.
Ciaran will continue alongside her Chairperson responsibilities in her dual role as one of the club’s three Club Development Officers, ensuring the club continues to grow while remaining true to the values upon which it was founded.
Speaking about her appointment, Ciaran said:
“It is an honour to be entrusted with the role of Chairperson at a club that means so much to me. I would like to thank Paul for everything he has done to establish such strong foundations for Runcorn Saxons FC. We have an incredible team of volunteers, coaches, players and parents, and I’m excited to work alongside them as we continue to develop opportunities for everyone in our community. Together, we’ll continue building a club that everyone can be proud to be part of.”
At the heart of everything the club does is its motto, ‘Magis Quam A Clava‘ – Latin for ‘More Than A Club.’
Those four words underpin the club’s One Club vision, promoting togetherness, unity and a genuine sense of belonging across every age group. From Reception aged children taking their very first kick of a football at four years old, through junior football and into adult open age teams, Runcorn Saxons FC is committed to providing a clear player progression pathway within a fun, structured and safe environment.
The club also remains committed to being as inclusive as possible, striving to provide opportunities for children and adults regardless of age, gender, disability, religion or footballing ability. The focus extends far beyond results on the pitch, with an emphasis on developing confidence, friendships, teamwork and a lifelong love of the game.
As the club continues to grow, Ciaran’s appointment reinforces Runcorn Saxons FC’s commitment to its founding principles while embracing ambitious plans for the future.
With the support of its dedicated volunteers, coaches, players, parents and wider community, the club looks forward to continuing its journey as More Than A Club.
